Lençóis Maranhenses National Park relies entirely on rainfall to fill its seasonal dune lagoons. If you arrive at the wrong time of year, you will only find empty stretches of white sand.
When are the lagoons fully filled?
The lagoons reach their peak depth between June and September.
Heavy rains from January to May fill the dune valleys with fresh water. Impermeable rock beneath the sand catches this rainwater. By June, the rain stops, leaving thousands of deep, clear lagoons. The days stay sunny through September, making this the ideal time to swim.
What is the best month to visit Lencois Maranhenses?
July and August are generally the top months to visit.
During these two months, water levels are at their absolute highest. You get the perfect combination of deep water for swimming and clear skies. September is also excellent, though water levels slowly start to drop as the dry season approaches.

Can you visit during the rainy season?
Yes, but you will experience frequent rain between January and May.
The park remains open, but tours can be uncomfortable due to wet weather. The lagoons are actively filling up during this time. Most travelers wait for the dry, sunny days of June.
What happens if you visit in the dry season?
Between October and December, most of the seasonal pools dry up completely.
You will mostly see massive stretches of empty white sand dunes. If you do visit during these months, take a 4x4 tour to Lagoa da Esperança. This is a permanent lagoon formed by the blocked Rio Negro, so it holds water all year round.

When is the best time for photography?
June to September offers the best lighting and contrast.
The blue waters contrast sharply against the white sand dunes under clear skies. For the best daily lighting, take an afternoon tour to the Lagoa Bonita circuit. It features a 30-meter (98-foot) dune climb that provides a 360-degree panoramic view for sunset.
Do you need to book early for peak season?
Yes, strict daily visitor caps apply to the national park.
The park limits entry to around 1,550 daily visitors. You must register in advance, a process usually handled by your authorized 4x4 tour operator. Booking ahead is essential for dates in July and August.

Questions travellers ask

Can you swim in the lagoons?
Yes, swimming is allowed and encouraged during the peak season from June to September when the water is deep.
Do the dunes change shape?
Yes, ocean winds constantly sculpt the 155,000 hectares (380,000 acres) of dunes, which can reach heights of up to 30 meters (98 feet).
