Most visitors to Lençóis Maranhenses start their dune trips from the gateway town of Barreirinhas.
These circuits require mandatory 4x4 vehicles to cross sandy trails into the 155,000-hectare park. Standard tours run for about half a day, taking 45 to 60 minutes each way.
You must book an authorized guide to enter the dunes. Private cars and rental vehicles are strictly banned in these zones.

This classic half-day tour leads to the park's famous and easily accessible lagoons. The water here is strikingly blue when full. Take the 8 AM morning tour for the best views. The direct overhead sun makes the turquoise colors stand out.

You will need to climb a steep 30-meter dune using a rope at the start. The effort rewards you with a 360-degree panoramic view over the dune field. This circuit is highly recommended as a sunset viewpoint. Book an afternoon tour to catch the evening light.

Unlike the seasonal rainwater pools, this lagoon is permanent. It formed where the dunes blocked the flow of the Rio Negro. This is an excellent alternative tour during the dry season. Visit between October and December when the seasonal lagoons are empty.
